New Zealand Wine

New Zealand’s distinctive winegrowing regions each have unique soils and climatic conditions that are expressed in the
wines produced.

Red wines.

Today, New Zealand is internationally most well known for red wines made from traditional French varieties. After Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir has become New Zealand’s second most planted variety, while in the warmer regions, particularly Hawke’s Bay and Waiheke Island, Syrah and Bordeaux-style blends of mainly Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon have been gaining recognition. White wines.

The much-lauded white wines of New Zealand tend to be slightly sweeter than those from Bordeaux and the Loire Valley and are hugely influenced by the growing conditions of the country.

Meet  The Winery.

Villa Maria is New Zealand’s most awarded and prestigious winery. From a one-man band to a global brand in 50 years, Villa Maria was established in 1961 by George Fistonich at just 21 years old.

It began in the suburb of Mangere in the south of Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city. George leased five acres of land from his father and produced his first vintage in 1962. Villa Maria remains in Mangere today just a stone’s throw from the original site. The Auckland winery and vineyard park sit in a natural crater and houses a highly regarded restaurant, cellar door and event spaces. Villa Maria also has a winery and cellar door in two of New Zealand’s most important wine regions – Marlborough and Hawkes Bay.

Today Villa Maria remains proudly 100% family-owned and has been at the forefront of innovation, quality and sustainable practices for over 50 years. Villa Maria employs more than 250 permanent staff, grows 28 different grape varieties, and exports wine to over 60 countries worldwide.  In 2019 Villa Maria was recognized as the third most admired wine brand in the world by Drinks International magazine.
